It Was Never You vs. Them. It’s Always Been You vs. You

If you’ve spent any time in the home-buying grind, or just, you know, living, it’s easy to believe you’re up against the world. Every offer rejected, every “Sorry, we picked another buyer,” every headline about rising rates… it stacks up. It feels personal. And the story your brain starts to tell is: it’s me vs. them.

Spoiler: it’s not.

The Real Fight Is in the Mirror

Let’s put aside the Instagram-meme inspiration for a second. When I say “It’s you vs. you,” I don’t mean the motivational-poster version, where you’re supposed to simply outwork your shadow self until you’re a superhuman. No, it’s messier than that. It’s about wrestling with doubt, inertia, the part of you that says, “Maybe this isn’t for me.”

As a coach, a realtor, and a human who’s lost his share of battles, here’s what I’ve learned: The market’s tough, yes. But the bigger obstacle? Our own stories. Stories about what’s “possible,” what’s “fair,” what “other people” get that we somehow don’t.

And the biggest plot twist? The competition you think you’re fighting is mostly an illusion.

Stop Imagining an Enemy

I’ve seen it: clients blaming other buyers, the system, “unlucky timing,” or even their own agent (yours truly). It’s normal. But the longer you keep the focus outside, blaming, resenting, second-guessing, the further you drift from what you can actually control.

I don’t say this to let the system off the hook. Real estate is competitive, sometimes unfair, and occasionally just plain weird. But your real leverage lies in outsmarting your own resistance.

So What Do You Actually Do?

Face Your Stories. What are you telling yourself about what’s possible? About who “wins” in this market? Doesn’t it make sense that if you believe you’re always the underdog, you’ll subconsciously act like it? Check Your Grit. Are you moving with persistence, or are you waiting for someone to hand you permission? Embrace the Learning Curve. Every “no” is, at worst, a page in the playbook for your next move. Look at every failed offer as feedback, not a referendum on your worth. Own Your Power. The buyers who finally get the keys are the ones who stay curious, nimble, and self-aware. They learn. They ask questions. They refuse to let rejection turn into resignation.

Existential Side Note (Because I Can’t Help Myself)

At the risk of sounding like I read too much Camus in college: there’s a kind of freedom that comes from realizing nobody is actually keeping score except you. The meaning is in the making, the fight, the learning, the persistence. Homeownership (like any worthwhile pursuit) is really just an arena for testing your own resolve.

My Call to You

So the next time you catch yourself scanning the room at an open house, a meeting, or just in life, and sizing up the “competition,” remember: it’s not you vs. them. It’s the “you” who doubts vs. the “you” who tries again. It’s the “you” who’s tired vs. the “you” who dreams a little bigger.

Want a home? Want a breakthrough? Want a new chapter? Let’s outgrow yesterday’s limits…together.

And if you need a little extra fire for the journey, or just someone to remind you that you’re not crazy for wanting more, you know where to find me.
